Elevating assessment skills using kinesiology and palpation: Hip muscles

  • Students will list movements of the hip
  • Students will identify the origins, insertions, and actions of the hip muscles
  • Students will lead partner through hip muscle movements 
  • Students will identify dysfunction and abnormalities in movement and palpation of the hip muscles

By the end of class, students will demonstrate knowledge of the kinesiology of the area of the body (hip, lower leg, arm, trunk, neck, head and face, and shoulder) that is the focus of that class. They will lead the partner/client through muscle movements to assess variations in the subject’s movement and palpate the muscles of the area of the body discussed. The class will discuss modifications of treatment plans resultant of findings during palpation and kinesiology assessment.

About the Instructor: A licensed massage therapist since 1993, Mario has worked with an array of clientele encountering many true to life situations. It is many of these antidotes that Mario shares with class participants to balance and validate the theoretical terms and concepts.  Humor, class participation, and inspiration are important components of classes taught by Mario. In 2006 Mario started teaching continuing education courses to licensed massage therapists. The subjects include Postural Analysis, Neuromuscular massage for; Cervical/Neck, Shoulder/Rotator cuff, and Lumbar/ Low Back regions Mario has been an instructor for 28 years. Subjects Mario teaches are, Anatomy/Physiology and Pathology, Sports Massage, Neuromuscular Massage, and Postural Analysis. Regularly described by his students as inspirational, enthusiastic, and humorous he has the ability to take a topic such as Anatomy and make it understandable and fun. Mario enjoys the challenge of educating students and changing their preconceived notions about a topic.

  • Foundation in Manual Therapy: Voice and Swallowing Disorders Flagstaff- April 2025 - Flagstaff

    Walt Fritz is a physical therapist from Upstate New York, USA. Since beginning work as an educator in the physical and massage therapy domains in the mid-1990s, he has more recently applied a unique take on manual therapy for the speech pathology and voice communities. This approach attempts to move the bar from singular tissue-specific models into a multifactorial narrative, leaning heavily on biopsychosocial influences. Using a model of evaluation and intervention that relies more strongly on shared decision-making, the principles can be applied to the spectrum of intervention models. Seeing the utility of manual therapy not as a standalone treatment but as an integral part of clinicians’ more extensive work, Walt makes his approach easily assimilated into those treatment protocols.

    Walt teaches internationally to speech-language pathologists, voice professionals, massage therapists, physiotherapists, and other clinicians through his Foundations in Manual Therapy Seminars, www.WaltFritz.com. Walt is a frequent workshop presenter at the annual Voice Foundations Symposiums and has presented at PAVA conferences, the 3rd World Congress of Fascia, the British Voice Association’s 2021 Voice Clinics Forum, and international online conferences for voice, swallowing, and related issues.     Take an aromatic journey through the world of essential oils and discover which ones support excitatory neurotransmitters (like dopamine) and inhibitory neurotransmitters (like serotonin) naturally so that you can support your brain’s desire to maintain homeostasis.     Students will learn the Traditional Chinese Medicine modality Gua Sha which is used to invoke circulatory movement of blood and Qi in the facial tissue. Indications and contraindications along with how to use a Gua Sha Tool will be demonstrated with plenty of time to practice in class. A jade Gua Sha tool set is included with tuition.

    Kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of movement. In this class, we will build on participants’ kinesiology knowledge to explore how understanding how our muscles move can enhance our treatment planning and massage sessions. We will review joint movements, muscle attachments, and movements and strategies to palpate these muscles efficiently. We will use these tools to explore how we can incorporate this knowledge into treatment planning, providing our clients an effective massage session. This course is a series of 6, 3-hour classes broken down into different regions of the body. Participants may choose any number of classes in the series to attend in any order.
