(Newswire.net — July 17, 2017) –Sarah Cummins, a 25-year-old Purdue University pharmacy student, and her ex-fiancé Logan Araujo, had booked a reception at the Ritz Charles in Carmel, Indiana, but they called it off a week before the July 15 ceremony.
Logan covered the largest part of the big day costs, while Sarah’s parents and one of Logan’s family friends paid the remaining portion of the $ 30,000 bill. It was a nonrefundable contract for a 170-plate dinner, meaning that all the food and decoration would go to waste.
Instead, Sarah came up with the idea on how to make use of the food – she contacted several local shelters and invited about 170 homeless people to a banquet.
Logan liked her idea to throw a $30,000 reception for the homeles. Also, local businesses donated suits and dresses to the guests, while Sarah arranged for two buses to pick them up.
The banquet at the Ritz Charles in Carmel was very elegant and gala. The menu included bourbon-glazed meatballs, chicken breast with artichokes, Chardonnay cream sauce, goat cheese, and roasted garlic bruschetta. In the end, the guests were served a piece of the wedding cake.
Event planner at the Ritz Charles Maddie LaDow said that this was not the first wedding to be canceled at short notice, but that no one has ever done anything this charitable.
Sarah told local media that the last minute wedding cancelation was really devastating.
”It was really devastating, I called everyone, cancelled, apologized, cried, called vendors, cried some more, and then I started feeling really sick about just throwing away all the food I ordered for the reception,” bride-to-be told to the local paper IndyStar.
But, even in such hard times, she made a noble decision and was lucky to be backed by her ex- fiancé.
They also agreed on the honeymoon, booked in the Dominican Republic the day after the wedding ceremony. Logan transferred his ticket and Sarah took her mother instead.
