Career Paths for Massage Therapists: Overview (Part 1 of 5)

Careers Section NewspaperOne of the many wonderful things about graduating from an accredited massage therapy school like ASIS Massage Education is the many opportunities ahead of you. In this 5-part series, we’ll discuss the different career paths available to you after graduation.
Let’s start with an overview of the four main fields you can work in as a licensed massage therapist:

Hospitality
Would you find it enriching to perform bodywork on people, not in times of stress or injury, but in times of rest and relaxation? As a massage therapist in the hospitality industry, you could enhance people’s vacations and even their daily lives in such places as spas, salons, vacation resorts, cruise ships, and so on.

Healthcare
Perhaps you went to massage therapy school because you are drawn towards alternative healing? Is it your goal to tangibly help people? As a massage therapist in the healthcare field, you can work at places such as hospitals, clinics, physical therapy offices, hospices, and chiropractic offices, and help people suffering from a variety of conditions, such as cancer, or just to relieve the stress, aches, and pains that come from common occurrences such as pregnancy or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sports
Do you like to be where the action is? Are you a sports fan? Many professional teams have a massage therapist on staff to make sure that players achieve optimal performance and recover quickly when injured. You can work for an athletic organization or with individual athletes.

Private Practice
Apart from (or in addition to!) all the aforementioned career paths available to you as a licensed massage therapist, you can also go into private practice or work freelance. Wether you choose to operate a private practice full-time or freelance part-time, benefits include setting your own rates, working as much or as little as you want, and last but definitely not least, being your own boss!

We hope this article provided you with an overview of the many career paths open to you. Read the next article in the series for more information on careers in hospitality.
